Name: Douglas WareingDoug Wareing

Day Job: Director and Founder of Jazz House Big Band, Retired Music Educator

Instrument:  Drum Set, Percussion, Saxophone

Musical Background:

In addition to being the band’s director and founder, Doug should rightly be called the owner of the band since all of the support equipment it takes to put on a performance, except for individual instruments owned by band members, belongs to Doug.  Over the years, Doug has collected several hundred charts and arrangements that the band uses.  The sound systems, specialized instruments, music stands and even the chairs belong to Doug.   His most important contribution, however, is creating a vision and steering the band in a direction that personifies big band jazz. Doug’s life has been teaching and playing jazz.  He has played in jazz bands, (for many years they were called dance bands), his entire adult life.  He has gained insights over the years about the nuances and “language” of big band jazz, what the notes really say, what really they mean.  Those things he teaches the players in the band. Doug taught in Idaho and Utah public schools for many years. His love was jazz and more particularly big band jazz.  Doug’s high school jazz bands set the standard for competing high school jazz groups.  In addition, he had award winning vocal groups and choirs.  Doug has a BA degree from Idaho State University.
